Hyde County health officials today announced that three residents have recently died as a result of COVID-19.

That brings the coronavirus death toll to 79 in the thirteen northeastern counties of North Carolina.

“This is heartbreaking to our agency, and the staff wish to convey our condolences to the family and friends of those who have lost loved ones,” said county Health Director Luanna Gibbs.

Health officials did not say where in the county the residents lived, or give any biographical information.

Gibbs said the county continues to see community spread of the virus and urged people to take precautions.

“Please take this seriously,” she said. “Though most people recover, not all do.”

Since testing began in March, Hyde County has experienced 107 COVID-19 cases, with 38 active now and 66 people recovered.

With Hyde County now recording its first deaths, that leaves just Currituck as the only county in northeastern North Carolina to not yet lose a resident to the coronavirus.

Pasquotank County has the most deaths, 23, of any county in the northeast corner of the state, according to the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services.

2,803 residents of North Carolina have died since the pandemic started in mid-March.
