Gov. Roy Cooper today announced he has signed a new executive order to prevent evictions in North Carolina for those who can’t afford rent.
The move comes as more than a quarter million North Carolinians face possible eviction filings by January. Cooper said due to pandemic-related job losses and pay cuts, as many as 400,000 residents may not be able to afford to pay rent.
“Many families are trying to do the right thing, but this virus has made it difficult,” Cooper said at a Wednesday afternoon briefing.
His order builds on the CDC’s federal eviction moratorium and requires landlords to ensure tenants are aware of the CDC protections and how to claim them.
“The result during this global pandemic will be more people staying in their homes, more landlords getting rent and fewer utility companies shutting off power,” Cooper said.
