Virginia Beach, VA
Fulton Whidbee, 91, of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away on Monday, January 15, 2024, in Raleigh, NC. He left this world peacefully, with family by his side.
Fulton was born to the late Charles H. Whidbee and Ruth Barnes Whidbee on October 16, 1932. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years, Rose Gallop Whidbee, son Kenneth Fulton Whidbee, and son-in-law Patrick Neil Brumley, Sr.
Fulton is survived by his two daughters, Karen Whidbee Brumley and Lisa Kay Whidbee, five grandchildren, Tiffany Brumley Stuflick (Todd), Sarah Brumley Lightner (Bobby), Patrick Neil Brumley, Jr, Eric Whidbee, and Emilene Whidbee, seven great-grandchildren, and beloved cousins and friends. He was loved for his kind heart, his tales of the past, and his ability to make anyone smile.
Fulton grew up fishing and hunting on the shores of Salvo and Manteo, NC. He served in the US Coast Guard, including as a keeper of the Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse, before starting a career in newspaper printing at The Coastland Times and retiring from the Virginian Pilot. He raised his family in Virginia Beach, where he enjoyed beekeeping, gardening, and sitting by his fishpond with his beloved dog, Roxie. He would say though, “there’s no place like Dare County,” and he always felt most at home on the Outer Banks.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, January 22, 2024, at Twiford Funeral Home in Manteo, NC. The family will receive visitors 30 minutes prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, please consider planting a tree in his honor or donating to the Virginia State Beekeepers Association.
