Foster parenting classes to be offered in February 2023

Dare County Department of Health & Human Services will be offering Foster Parent Training classes beginning February 28, 2023. The classes will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in Manteo and last for 10 weeks. These classes are one of the requirements to become a Foster Parent; other requirements will be discussed and completed in the classes.

“At any given time, there are 20-50 children in need of foster homes in Dare County,” commented Kelsey Fernandez, Foster Home Licensing Social Worker. “These children come into foster care under no fault of their own. We hope you’ll consider making a difference in the life of a child by becoming a foster parent.”

Foster care is intended to be temporary and placements can last anywhere from a night or two to a year or more.  On some occasions, children may be unable to return home and another permanent plan such as adoption is possible. Children in foster care can range from birth to 21 years old, and foster parents are able to specify a desired age range for placements in their home.

Registration for class closes on February 17, 2023. For more information about foster parenting, please visit DareNC.gov/FosterParents or contact Kelsey Fernandez at 252.475.5524 or Kelsey.Fernandez@dcdss.org.
