Cape Hatteras National Seashore will open a new public beach access and parking area in Buxton on May 24.
The Buxton Beach Access, at the end of Old Lighthouse Road, previously served as a U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard base.
The access has a 50-car parking area and portable restrooms. A non-slip wheelchair beach access mat will be also be available.
Plans for a permanent restroom facility with showers and other site upgrades are currently under development, the National Park Service said in a news release.
Visitors planning a trip to the new Buxton Beach Access should be aware that reaching the site requires travel through a residential area. Pay close attention to pedestrians on Old Lighthouse Road and the speed limit signs, the park service said.
In November 2013, the National Park Service issued a Finding of “No Significant Impact for a Proposal to Construct New Development That Facilitates Public Access at the Seashore.” Twenty-nine projects were approved as part of the plan, including the new Buxton Beach Access and Kite Point parking area.
