First Flight High School golfer Katherine Schuster became just the second golfer in North Carolina High School Athletic Association history to complete a career sweep of the state championships on Tuesday at famed Pinehurst Resort.

Normally contested in October over two days, this year’s NCHSAA 1A/2A state final was played as a single round event at Pinehurst #8.

After opening with a double-bogey on the first hole and a bogey at the 4th, Schuster found her touch and birded the next four holes to make the turn with a one-under 35 and a three shot lead as the rest of the field started to slide backwards.

On the back nine, Schuster would post birdies at 11, 12 and 15, and bogeys at 13 and 16, to close with a 2-under round of 70 and a six shot victory.

Schuster, who is headed to Clemson this fall, took a seven stroke victory at the East Regional Championship last week at Lane Tree Golf Club in Goldsboro.

Currently 64th in the Rolex American Junior Golf Association rankings, Schuster has three top-10 finishes in her last four AJGA outings.

She tied for fifth at the AJGA Juniors at 12 Oaks last month, and made the cut in her first appearance in a professional mini-tour event in Florida back in September as the only amateur in the field.

Jennifer Chang of Athens Drive in Raleigh was the first four-time champion in North Carolina history, winning the 4A championships from 2014 to 2017.
