Expect possible thunderstorms and high heat indices throughout the remainder of the week

Today, Wednesday, July 6, marks the start of an active week according to a briefing released by the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City (NOAA).

Dangerous heat indices of 105-110 degrees are expected today followed by strong to severe thunderstorms possible late this afternoon and evening. These possible storms bring the threat for damaging winds and torrential downpours with localized flooding. Some large hail and frequent lightning may accompany the storms as well.

The NOAA also reports that Thursday through Saturday, multiple rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms are possible as a very unstable atmosphere remains in place. Very heavy rain rates are possible with any of the storms, with the best chances for storms occurring during the afternoon through evening hours. In addition, heat index values may approach or exceed 105 on Thursday and Friday.

A cold front will push through later Saturday or early Sunday ending the unsettled weather pattern and bringing relief from the oppressive heat and humidity.
