Downtown Books to host signing for Parker’s ‘Our Family, Its History, Their Boats: Six Generations of Boat Builders in Dare County’

"Our Family, Its History, Their Boats: Six Generations of Boat Builders in Dare County" by Manteo native LeVern Davis Parker. [Submitted]

Downtown Books will be celebrating October’s First Friday this week with a book signing featuring Manteo native LeVern Davis Parker who has recently published the beautiful hardback Our Family, Its History, Their Boats: Six Generations of Boat Builders in Dare County.

Parker’s family ties in boat building can be traced back to her great-great-grandfather, George Washington Creef, Sr, who crafted the ‘shad boat’ which he built to maneuver in the shallow waters of Roanoke Island. In 1987, this boat became the official state historic boat of North Carolina.

Throughout the book she introduces the reader through words and photos to boat builders, Manteo’s history, boat racing and her family. There has been much local interest in her book and many copies are being bought for holiday gifts.

LeVern will be greeting friends, talking boats and signing books on First Friday, October 7th, from 6pm – 7:30pm at Downtown Books, 103 Sir Walter Raleigh Street, Manteo.

Downtown Books is the independent bookstore on Roanoke Island serving the entire Outer Banks and has been voted Best Bookstore on the Beach three years running. To reserve a copy of LeVern’s book or for more information call 252-473-1056.
