What do you get the person that has everything for Christmas? How about a donation in their honor to the Currituck 4-H Backpacks for Kids Program? This program is administered by the Currituck Extension Foundation, a federally recognized 501(c)(3) so your contributions are tax deductible.
The 4-H Backpacks For Kids Program which launched in April of 2011, provides nutritious meals for students who are identified by school staff as being food insecure. Meals are sent home with the students each weekend throughout the school year. This program is supported 100% through community donations, corporate donations, and grant funds.
Volunteers from the community, including deputies from the local sheriff’s department, help make delivery of the food possible. Each child receives enough food for six full weekend meals, including cereal or breakfast bars, a protein source in the form of a pop top shelf stable meal, canned vegetables and fruit, soup, juice boxes and a snack such as peanut butter crackers or yogurt snacks. Through this program, children at-risk of hunger can receive adequate nutrition on the weekends when school meals are unavailable. The program typically serves in excess of 100 Currituck County elementary students each week.
The approximate cost to feed one child monthly is twenty dollars. Donations can also be received at the Currituck Extension Center located at 120 Community Way in Barco. Checks should be made payable to the Currituck Extension Foundation.
