Donald (Don) F. Dwyer, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on August 31, 2023, at his home in Manteo, NC. He was 89 years old. Born on December 9, 1933, in Troy, NY, Don led a fulfilling life that touched the hearts of those around him.
Don’s career was marked by dedication and professionalism. He graduated from Saint Rose College with a bachelor’s degree in business and went on to work as a general foreman at Al Tech Steel Corp in Watervliet, NY. With his strong work ethic, he later became an IRS Agent, leaving a lasting impact on his colleagues and the community he served.
Outside of his professional life, Don had a wide range of interests and hobbies that brought him joy. During his high school years, he was an active member of the Grenadiers Drum Corp and the basketball team. Later in life, Don enjoyed competing in dart leagues, swimming, camping, and spending time at the Elk’s club. His love for shag dancing filled his evenings with happiness, and he treasured the memories made while traveling the world and sharing stories with his loved ones.
Don’s family and friends were of utmost importance to him. He is survived by his loving spouse, Ann Cummings Dwyer, who stood by his side through thick and thin. Together, they created a beautiful family that will carry his legacy forward. Don leaves behind daughters Christine M. Wyatt (Peter Keith) of Winchester, VA, Colleen M. Salway (Chris) Ormand Beach, FL; sons Donald F. Dwyer (Julie) of Ballston Spa, NY, and Daniel P. Dwyer (Rene) of Canton, GA.
His grandchildren, Donald Dwyer, Lisa Ferland, Justin Wyatt, Kathleen Patel, Daniel Dwyer, Kristin Salway, Gillian Dwyer, Jessica Dunlap, Heather Salway, Matt Salway, Nicholas Salway, and Katie Salway, were the pride and joy of his life. Don’s great-grandchildren, Bella, Sophie, Marley, Cooper, Landon, Ryker, Spencer, Lillie, Danny, Calvin, Lucy, Leah, Megan, Dillon, Lucas, and Logan, added an extra sparkle to his days. He also leaves behind his loyal four-legged companion, Molly.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Helen Gibson Dwyer and Donald Dwyer, as well as his brother Richard Dwyer. While he may be gone, his memory lives on in the hearts of those who loved him.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, September 4, 2023, at Twiford Colony Chapel, Manteo. The family will receive friends and relatives prior to the service beginning at 12:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Outer Banks SPCA, as Don had a deep love for animals and believed in their well-being.
Donald F. Dwyer will be dearly missed, but his spirit will forever remain in the cherished memories of his family and friends. May he rest in eternal peace.
