The 61 dogs rescued by Currituck County Animal Control and Services last week from a breeder in Moyock will soon be available for adoption.

The previous owner of the dogs officially relinquished ownership of the dogs on Thursday to Currituck County, which allows the Currituck County Animal Shelter to begin the process of making the dogs available for adoption as each dog’s health allows.

The seizure took place on Jan. 28 at Bentwood Labradors after a report of stray dogs running loose on Robert Walker Road.

47 adults and 14 puppies were reportedly found in “unsanitary and inhumane living conditions”. A female adult dog was found dead in a kennel.

Tim Warren has been charged with 61 counts of failure to provide medical care, adequate food and water, and sanitary living conditions; eight counts of violating the county’s restraint ordinance; and eight counts of nuisance. Warren was also charged with one count of failing to provide vet care that resulted in a death.

The same week, Currituck Animal Control was called to seize four dogs and seven cats from a home in Knotts Island.

Anyone interested in adoption is asked to be patient, as there have been a large number of adoption applications received by the Animal Shelter.

Some applicants have already been approved and staff will process remaining and new applications as quickly as they can, and will be contacting these individuals about adoption.

Several of the rescued dogs are receiving medical care. Therefore, some of the dogs will be ready for adoption before others. In addition to this group of rescues, there are also other dogs, and cats, at the shelter that are currently ready for adoption.

Contact the Shelter for updates on the rescued dogs’ health and information about specific pets, at 252-453-8682. The Animal Shelter is open for anyone who wishes to view the available pets ready for adoption, Tuesday through Saturday 12 to 5 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 6 p.m.
