DCDHHS custodian Willie Spencer honored as April 2022 Employee of the Month

Willie Spencer, who serves as a custodian for the Dare County Department of Health & Human Services’ Social Services Division, was named Dare County Employee of the Month for April 2022, at the Dare County Board of Commissioners meeting that was held at 9 a.m. on Monday, April 4, 2022.

Spencer was presented the award by Chuck Lycett, Director of the Dare County Department of Health & Human Services’ Social Services Division.

“Willie joined us in July 2021 as a custodian, and he came in and took off running on day one,” said Lycett. “With a little bit of direction, he took off running and just made a huge impact on Social Services in the cleanliness of the building. It wasn’t surprising to be walking down the hall and he’s wiping down the doors and all of the trim around the doors. He was up on a ladder cleaning the blinds. He went above and beyond to make sure the building was clean.”

Lycett also praised Spencer specifically for his hard work and dedication that went above and beyond his daily duties throughout the duration of the Dare County Department of Health & Human Services’ recently completed renovation and expansion project.

“During this time period, we were in the midst of construction, and we assumed some of the responsibilities of moving furniture so that the flooring contractor and the painters could get in to do their job, and Willie just jumped in—hand truck and all—and he was moving some of the biggest pieces of furniture you’ve seen all by himself, moving them from office to office. He continued to do that even after construction when people needed their offices moved,” said Lycett.

The positive sentiments expressed by Lycett during his presentation were also echoed by the comments written by some of Spencer’s coworkers on his Employee of the Month nomination form.

“Willie is a person that is always willing to help! He just does not [only] do what you asked; he goes above and beyond,” wrote one nominator. “Willie truly cares for the agency and is always looking for ways to make it look better. He does his job with pride. Not only does he maintain everything smelling super clean and looking sharp, but Willie is not afraid to take on new projects, [and he’s] always willing to learn and lend a hand.”

Another colleague’s submission stated, “Willie has a wonderful personality and a can-do attitude. He does a phenomenal job of keeping our building clean and smelling nice and fresh. He is also always willing to help out in any way that he can. During the construction process of our building, he helped [move] desks and other office furniture and cleaned up after the construction crew. Willie’s very friendly and makes a point to say hi to anyone that passes his way. He has been a wonderful addition to the Social Services Division, and we are fortunate to have him as part of our team!”

Upon presenting Spencer with his Dare County Employee of the Month award for April 2022, Lycett said, “Willie, I want to thank you for the work that you’ve done over the last couple of months. We’re looking forward to many, many more months and years of your service with us.”
