David Walter Hitchings

David Walter Hitchings of Moyock, North Carolina passed away after several months of illness on August 1, 2021.

He was born in Caribou, Maine on October 19, 1930 to Eugene and Edith Hitchings. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Margaret Russell Hitchings; his son, John Hitchings; his sister, Doris Cyr, all of Caribou; and his brother, Robert Hitchings of Kittery, Maine.

He is survived by his son, Paul Hitchings (and wife Sidney) of Jackson, Tennessee, and his daughter, Mary Saunders, of Moyock, North Carolina; his brother, Gerald W. Hitchings of Virginia Beach, Virginia and his sister, Nora Todd of Framingham, Massachusetts. He is additionally survived by his daughter-in-law, Claudia Hitchings of Caribou; and three grandchildren, Matthew in Richmond, Virginia, Amy in North Carolina and Hayley in Tennessee.

Mr. Hitchings served his country honorably in the U. S. Army and experienced a number of careers: farming with his father, managing the operations in a chemical fertilizer factory, and maintaining the equipment in the old Birds Eye plant , later moving those skills to a subsequent owner in Houlton. In his “spare” time he built a new home that he and his family lived in for many years.

With the exception of his last decade, he lived his life in Caribou. He then moved to North Carolina to reside with his daughter where he enjoyed the milder climate and being her head of yard and house maintenance. During his 80 years in Caribou he was a devoted member of the United Baptist Church. He will be remembered as a family man, a good neighbor, and one who was there for those that need a helping hand.

A visitation will be held from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 7, 2021 at Twiford Memorial Chapel. Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is serving the Hitchings family. You may express condolences to the family by
