A local woman whose mother was killed and father seriously injured in a Monday morning crash on U.S. 158 is asking for prayers.

The crash happened at 8:14 a.m. in the 8900 block of Caratoke Highway in Point Harbor, according to Trooper D.B. Banks of the N.C. Highway Patrol. Barbara Sherman, who was driving, died at the scene while her husband Rick suffered critical injuries.

In a public Facebook post, Allison Sherman Brown thanked the community for an outpouring of calls, messages and texts of support.

“We feel surrounded by the Outer Banks community with love and prayers. Thank you for that presence. It is what is sustaining our strength,” she wrote. “My only reason for this post is to ask for prayer for him.”

Rick Sherman suffered many broken bones and needs help breathing. He is scheduled for surgery this afternoon at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he was listed in stable, but still critical condition on Tuesday.

“The bigger prayer is for his heart. He and my mom shared one heart and last night he learned that she is gone,” Brown wrote.

“Only God can pull Dad through this and I know he is for us all. Can we all stand as one on behalf of him (Rick) today?” she wrote. “Thank you again from my mom who loved you all dearly, my dad who is the kindest man we all know, and all of the rest of us. We love you. I will update as I can. Let’s get dad back in that fishing boat!”
