Dare Master Gardeners, Dare County Library hosting virtual garden series

Are you interested in gardening? Here’s a way to make your winter blues go away. Start planning your spring garden now with the Library Garden Series presented by the North Carolina State Extension’s Dare County Master Gardeners in conjunction with the Dare County Library.

This year’s programs will all be held virtually via Zoom, and all programs will take place on Wednesdays at 11 a.m.

The presentations will each last approximately one hour, and participants can choose to attend one or all of the programs that they are interested in. The series will include many brand-new programs that have never been offered before, as well as some of the most popular program topics from years past.

“Plants that Survive & Thrive on the Outer Banks” – 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 19, 2022

The 2022 Garden Series will kick off at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 19, 2022, with “Plants that Survive & Thrive on the Outer Banks,” which is a familiar topic that will feature all new plant selections this year. The Dare County Master Gardeners have chosen several plants that have done well in the tough conditions of the Outer Banks, including geraniums, hollyhock, butterfly weed, hosta, oleander, aucuba and hydrangeas.

“Pollinators” – 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 2, 2022

We are dependent upon pollinators for our food as well as supporting our ecosystem, and this program will address our need for these pollinators and what we can do to help them. “Pollinators” will be presented at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 2, 2022.

“Gardening 101 for the Outer Banks” – 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 16, 2022

Do you want to start a garden but don’t know where to begin? This brand-new program will provide you with research-based methods for starting a garden while also taking into consideration the challenges the Outer Banks environment offers. “Gardening 101 for the Outer Banks” will be presented at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, February 16, 2022.

“Native Plants for Your Backyard” – 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 2, 2022

Adding a native plant to your landscape helps care for nature and enhances the local environment while also adding beauty and diversity to the area. In this brand-new program, “Native Plants for Your Backyard,” you will learn about these plants that are well adapted to the physical environment formed by our local climate, weather conditions, soil types and other factors that affect gardening on the Outer Banks. This brand-new program will be presented at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 2, 2022.

“Using Native Plants to Attract Wildlife” – 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 16, 2022

Migrating and year-round birds are best adapted to native plants for food and cover, and this program will describe the various plants that can be used to attract them. The program will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 16, 2022.

“Controlling Pests – Bad Boys on the Outer Banks” – 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 30, 2022

The 2022 Garden Series will wrap up with another brand-new program, “Controlling Pests – Bad Boys on the Outer Banks.” This program will teach you to identify some of the most common pests on the Outer Banks and provide methods for controlling them in your garden, home and landscape. “Controlling Pests – Bad Boys on the Outer Banks” will be presented at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 30, 2022.

All of these presentations are provided courtesy of the North Carolina State Extension’s Dare County Master Gardeners Speakers Bureau. Individuals must pre-register to attend these virtual programs by visit DareNC.com/Enrichment.
