The Dare County Planning Department has announced that a free webinar designed to educate homeowners about flood insurance coverage and inform them of potential savings on their policies will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 8, 2021.

The webinar—which is being held in partnership between Dare County and the towns of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head and Manteo—will be conducted by staff members from SmartVent. A variety of topics will be covered, including new laws that affect flood insurance policies and mitigation steps that can be taken to reduce the cost of premiums. Real homeowner examples will be shared, and a Q&A session will also be held at the end of the webinar so homeowners can obtain the answers to any questions they may have following the presentation.

If you are unable to attend the webinar on April 8 or are interested in receiving more personalized guidance regarding your flood insurance policy, one-on-one sessions can also be scheduled to review individual cases.

Webinar hosts will review elevation certificates and educate property owners on how to read them properly, so participants are advised to have their flood insurance policy and elevation certificate handy during the webinar. If you don’t have an elevation certificate and would like to request a copy, email obx@yourfloodrisk.com.

Dare County is one of more than 1,500 communities nationwide that participate in the Community Rating System (CRS), a voluntary incentive program that encourages community floodplain management practices that exceed the minimum requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program. Participating communities are recognized with discounts on flood insurance policies for implementing activities within the community that promote flood hazard awareness and mitigate flood losses. Dare County has participated in the CRS program since it was created in 1992.
