Dare County Sheriff’s Office warns of recent phone scam affecting area

The Dare County Sheriff’s Office has issued a release warning of a recent phone scam in which individuals dubbing themselves as the Sheriff’s Office are targeting callers saying they have missed court when contacted as a juror.

The Sheriff’s Office says scammers will get callers on the line and tell them how they can purge themselves from the warrant by paying an amount of money, but to not disconnect from the call. At some point they will ask callers to get a cash card from a business to pay money.

If they give the number a call back, call recipients will get an answering machine message and offers three further options.

According to the release, one of the phone numbers the scammers appear to be using is (252) 216-3046.

The Dare County Sheriff’s Office encourages the public to inform friends and family members in lieu of additional victims falling prey to the ploy.

The Sheriff’s Office will never ask for money over the phone.

If you have any further questions, please contact the Dare County Sheriff’s Office at (252) 475-5980.
