Diablo was the partner of sheriff’s Sgt. Shaun Barrera, whose wife called him more than “just a dog.”

“Diablo, you were bred with a job to do and you sure met the expectations. You served this county with honor and courage all the way until the end,” she said in the Facebook post. “You were tough and Dare County will never have another one like you. You were truly one of a kind.”

The sheriff’s office held a procession Monday morning to honor Diablo and his service.
