Dare County and the Outer Banks Association of Realtors will host a community meeting about property insurance on Tuesday, October 22 at 6 p.m. in the First Flight High School Auditorium.
Special guest Dr. Michelle Osborne, Chief Deputy Commissioner with the NC Department of Insurance, will discuss the different types of insurance coverage, the importance of flood insurance, proposed changes to the National Flood Insurance Program, and the North Carolina Rate Bureau’s filing of a statewide flood insurance program.
In addition, OBAR Chief Executive Officer Willo Kelly will provide tips to help policyholders save money. Dare County Planning Director Donna Creef will discuss the anticipated effective date for preliminary flood maps and local elevation standards.
Attendees will have an opportunity to learn and ask questions about topics of interest, including the increase for property insurance rates that will become effective in the spring and the rate increase requested by the NC Rate Bureau for wind and fire coverage for second homes beginning next summer.
“We find that many homeowners are unfamiliar with their property insurance policies, whether homeowners, wind or flood,” said Planning Director Donna Creef. “This meeting will provide an opportunity for citizens to come together and learn about how to save money, ask questions about various policies, and stay updated about related issues.”
