Dare County Library announces adult speaker series programs for September 2022

Sustainable Gardening in the Outer Banks: Using Native Plants for Environmentally Friendly Gardening and Landscaping

Speaker: Rachel Veal, Horticulturist, North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island.

Date: September 9, 2022, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.
(Alternate Rain Date: September 16, 2022, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.)

Location: A virtual option is still available for interested participants; however, registration for the in-person program that will be held at the Kill Devil Hills Library’s meeting room is currently full.

Program Description: Have you ever wondered how to create a more sustainable, wildlife-friendly and enjoyable landscape for your home? Join us as we learn about the benefits of native plants and how to manage your yard in an ecofriendly way that also reflects the beauty of the place we call home.

NaNo 101 Prep Series

Speaker: Hope Ashby

Date: September 17, 2022, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Location: Kill Devil Hills Library meeting room (in-person only)

Program Description: Speaker Hope Ashby will prepare local writers to get started on their novels this November with a series of prep courses that will be held every other Saturday through October. The first session will cover developing a story idea you are passionate about as well as creating complex, believable characters.


The Beginnings of the Dare County Tourism Bureau and the Pirate Jamboree

Speaker: Tama Creef, Outer Banks History Center

Date: September 20, 2022, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

Location: Kill Devil Hills Library meeting room and virtually via Zoom

Program Description: What do you do to attract people to the beach in the off-season? Turn them into pirates, of course! Learn how the Dare County Tourist Bureau (now known as the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau) created an event that included the entire Outer Banks in a week of costume contests, cookouts and fun-filled mayhem.


Color Without Flowers: Foliage Takes the Stage with the Dare County Extension Master Gardeners

Date: September 28, 2022, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Location: Kill Devil Hills Library meeting room and virtually via Zoom

Program Description: Flowers come and go, but foliage plants provide long-lasting color throughout the seasons. During this program, participants will learn more about using foliage plants to enhance their landscape.


Registration Information: 

All four Dare County Library programs are free to Dare County residents and property owners ages 18 and older. Registration is required for in-person and virtual events as space is limited.

Many programs offer handouts to supplement the material that will be presented. If you are not able to print the handouts, please call your local library branch in advance so the items can be printed for you.
