Dare County coronavirus case count climbs to 22

North Carolina coronavirus map, May 14

Dare County’s coronavirus case count since the beginning of the pandemic is now 22. The latest patient is a Dare County resident and is recovering in isolation. All direct contacts were notified this morning, Dare County Health and Human Service Director Sheila Davies said in a video update.

The latest case may be the result of community spread as it is unclear how the patient acquired the virus, Davies said.

Of Dare County’s 22 cases, four are active, 17 have recovered or are asymptomatic and one died. Statewide, there were 16.705 coronavirus cases on Thursday with 615 deaths and 507 hospitalizations.

At the state level, North Carolina is pushing for increased testing and has established partnerships to further increase testing availability.

“We have inquired several times about providing opportunities for free or mass testing in Dare County but have been informed at this time all of the sites have already been selected,” Davies said in the video. “In the absence of available federal or state assistance at this time, we have been working to find alternative opportunities. I expect to be able to share more information on a local initiative for COVID-19 drive-thru testing by next week.”
