Dare Arts announces a call for entry for the 27th Annual Mollie Fearing Memorial Art Show, which will open on Sunday, May 5 at their Gallery in downtown Manteo.

Artists wishing to participate in this year’s exhibition can find a prospectus and sign up for a specific time to drop off their work online at DareArts.org/molliefearingshow.

Artist Patrick Berran will judge this year’s show. Berran has exhibited all over the United States and in the United Kingdom. He has recently completed artist residencies at the Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts in Ithaca, NY, Dial House in Essex, UK as well as the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in Amherst, VA. In 2012, Berran was named one of Modern Painters’ 100 Artists to Watch.

“Honoring Mollie’s contributions to our community is key to this long-standing exhibition,” said artist Patrick Berran. “I am honored to judge and I look forward to seeing many exciting artworks from artists throughout our community.”

The show is held in memory of Mollie A. Fearing, one of the founders of Dare Arts, and is known for showcasing vibrant, eclectic artwork.

“My mother and I lived in Miami, Florida when I was young,” said Mollie Fearing’s daughter Grizelle Fearing. “Her brother and his husband also lived there. Miami is where I first learned about art and music. We would go to art shows, outside sidewalk shows and museum exhibit openings. Our homes were filled with love, music and art. My mother painted and my uncles painted, needlepointed and petti-pointed. Music was always on, mostly classical, jazz and show tunes. When I think of art it is synonymous with music. My family is honored to have this spring show named for her. Every year we host a special reception for the public that attends the show, and I am looking forward to it.”

The opening reception will be held on Sunday, May 5 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Dare Arts’ Courtroom Gallery, and is free and open to the public.

After the opening, the show will be on display for viewing during normal gallery hours from May 7 through June 1.
