UPDATED, Thursday 9:15 p.m.: Two local school systems have made changes to their mask-related rules due to the recent spike in COVID-19 cases.

The Currituck County Board of Education voted during a special meeting Thursday to delay changing its indoor mask policy, while the Tyrrell County School Board voted Thursday to require masks inside buildings again starting Friday.

The case count for the last five days in the Currituck County Schools was at 71, the highest number of coronavirus cases reported during this school year, according to a news release.

Currituck’s school board voted in December to make masks optional beginning this Tuesday, and will review their mask policy at the next scheduled meeting on January 20.

The Tyrrell County Schools said they will have extra masks on hand for individuals who may need one. Students or staff members who had prior approved mask accommodations as a medical exemption are allowed to return to those previous measures.

Federal transportation regulations continue to require face coverings on school buses, regardless of local or state policies.
