Currituck County 4-H to host Pumpkin Chunkin Challenge at Currituck Farm Festival

[NC Cooperative Extension]

How fun is it to come up with a device that can throw a bright orange pumpkin as far as possible, see it splatter to smithereens, and have a chance at winning a prize? If this describes you we have the perfect event for you.

Currituck County 4-H is hosting a Pumpkin Chunkin Challenge at the Currituck Farm Festival on Oct 1, 2022 for youth ages 8-18. Participants will design and build a launching device capable of launching an ornamental (mini) pumpkin; scoring points for distance and accuracy.

There will be three age divisions: Junior 8-10, Intermediate 11-13, and Senior 14-18 with prizes awarded for Champion and Reserve Champion in each division.

To sign up for this fun and free contest first register for the Currituck Fall Festival at the Currituck Farm Festival Eventbrite, then finish your application by completing the rules and entry form at the Punkin Chunkin Contest Eventbrite.

If you would like to participate in the contest but need a little help with the design and build of a launcher we have just what you need, a Punkin Chunkin Engineering Workshop held at the Currituck Extension Center September 16, 2022 from 2pm-5pm.  Participants will learn the principles of force and energy, and how they affect the forward motion of an object. They will then apply that knowledge to design, build, and test a pumpkin chunkin catapult. This fee for this workshop is $10.00 and participants will receive all the supplies and materials necessary to construct their own pumpkin launcher to be used in the contest.

Space is limited so reserve your space by completing the registration at the Punkin Chunkin Launcher Design Eventbrite.  We are accepting cash and check payments in addition to paying via credit card through Eventbrite. Please, make checks payable to NCSU.

Checks and cash payments can be received at the Currituck Extension Office located at 120 Community Way Barco NC 27917, within 5 days of registration. Class size is limited and full registration, including payment, is required to hold your spot. If you have any problems registering please feel free to call us at 252-232-2261, and we will walk you through the process.
