Currituck 4-H’ers earn multiple top ten placements at the 2023 State 4-H Horse Show

The State 4-H Horse Show was held July 5-9 in Raleigh, NC at the Hunt Horse Complex. Currituck County had eight 4-Her’s earn the opportunity to compete as a result of their placings in the qualifying East Region District 4-H Horse Show.

The state horse show offers events for riders in the hunt seat division, showmanship, dressage, gaming, western pleasure and ranch horse classes.

Currituck 4-H’ers had an excellent competition with all eight riders earning multiple top ten placings in their respective classes:

Sophie Haislop was 1st in the Stakes race class and Hunter Pony Showmanship. She also earned top 10 placings in Hunter Under Saddle, Pony Equitation and Pony Bridle Path Hack.

Amber Jones was 1st in Long Stirrup(LS) Showmanship and Hunter Under Saddle and Reserve Champion in LS Hack. She also earned top 10 finishes in LS Fences, Equitation over Fences, and LS Equitation on the Flat. She closed out the show earning Long Stirrup overall Champion.

Isabell Cox placed second in Jr Pleasure and Trail and third in Jr Showmanship, Jr Horsemanship and Jr Western Show Hack earning Jr Western Reserve Champion for her performance.

Heather Healy placed in the top seven and above in all her classes with notable 4th  place finishes in Showmanship and Stock Hunter Showmanship. 

Cayden Lowe placed 1st in Western Showmanship, Western Pleasure, Western Show Hack and Pleasure Sr Horse. This, coupled with a second place finish in Halter Mares and Horsemanship earned Cayden Reserve Champion Senior Western Division and the opportunity to compete in Georgia at the Southern Region 4-H Horse Championship Show.

Olivia Green placed 1st in Little Britches Pleasure and Walk Jog Pleasure and placed 3rd in Little Britches Horsemanship and her overall placings in all her classes resulted in her being named Champion of the Little Britches Division.

Karleigh Meads placed top 10 in her Halter Mare, Little Britches and Rookie Showmanship and with top 5  finishes in Little Britches Trail (3rd) and Rookie Hunter Under Saddle (3rd).

Carsyn Sawyer had an outstanding show placing 1st or 2nd place finishes in Western Division Showmanship, Horsemanship, Pleasure Sr Horse, Sr Western Show Hack and Horsemanship Medal Class. Her consistently high placings resulted in her being named Champion of the Western Division.

The State 4-H horse show also offers a horse-related artistic expression competition in drawing, painting, photography, sewing, crafts and writing.

Isabel Cox placed seventh in crafts, tenth in sewing, 10th in drawing, eighth in poster. Johnny Cox placed seventh in poster and  Elijah Campbell  placed first in digitally enhanced photo, second in digitally created photo and tenth in photography.
