U.S. Fish and Wildlife is planning a controlled burn Monday morning at the Mackay Island Wildlife Refuge on Knotts Island in Currituck County.
Staff from three local national wildlife refuges plan to conduct a prescribed burn on North Marsh.
The 10-person crew will begin with aerial ignition – a helicopter will drop small spheres that will ignite the dry fuels.
“These prescribed fires improve wildlife habitat and reduce fuels, which provides protection from future wildfires. We always plan to conduct prescribed fires under conditions that send smoke away from local communities,” U.S. Fish and Wildlife said in a Facebook post.
Monday’s wind is forecast to be southwest at around 9 mph.
