A Connecticut man visiting the Outer Banks for his son’s wedding died after being struck by a vehicle while trying to cross N.C. 12 Friday night in Southern Shores.

Southern Shores police chief David Kole said the collision happened at the intersection of Ocean Boulevard and Chicahauk Trail around 8:20 p.m.

The victim was with his wife and a group of family and friends headed to the Chicahauk beach access, and were crossing N.C. 12 at the intersection that has both traffic and pedestrian signals.

Some of the group crossed while the pedestrian signal said they could do so.

After the signals indicated not to cross, and the traffic lights for N.C. 12 changed to green, one vehicle passed northbound through the intersection and the couple then tried to cross the road immediately behind it.

Chief Kole said the couple did not see a minivan also headed north which narrowly missed the woman but struck Roger Henry Ouellette, Jr., 65, of Watertown, Connecticut.

Ouellette was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he died from his injuries.

The driver of the minivan, a 60-year-old man from Maryland, was not hurt. No charges were filed, and speed and other factors were not involved, according to Kole.

“The victim and his family were here to celebrate the wedding of their son this weekend,” Kole said. “I ask the Dare County community to please lift up both of these families and their friends in prayer during this most difficult time.”
