College of the Albemarle campuses evacuated Thursday following bomb threat

The Elizabeth City Police Department received a call at approximately 1:55 pm on Thursday, June 30th, that a bomb was located on a College of The Albemarle (COA) campus.

The caller was not specific as to which campus; however, based on the information received, it was indicative that the threat could be referring to COA – Elizabeth City or COA – Dare.

Elizabeth City Police Department and Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Department, along with COA staff, evacuated COA – Elizabeth City promptly, conducting a primary search. Staff also evacuated COA – Dare promptly and awaited law enforcement.

Additionally, COA – Currituck and COA – Edenton-Chowan were evacuated out of an abundance of caution. All campuses were evacuated, searched and cleared by law enforcement and COA staff. Pasquotank-Camden Emergency Management was on scene at COA – Elizabeth City throughout the event today and coordinated response efforts there. The situation was cleared for all campuses at approximately 4:30 p.m.

Based on information received from the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS), there have been a number of threats today across community colleges throughout the state. This information was validated by a contact with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) through the Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is also aware of the situation. The FBI and NCSBI, along with law enforcement are monitoring the threats and investigating appropriately.

College of The Albemarle expresses sincere appreciation to Pasquotank-Camden Emergency Management and all responding law enforcement throughout our service area. The response Thursday was quick and well-coordinated among all agencies.
