Forty-four Coast Guard and Coast Guard Auxiliary members gathered on September 11th for the 2nd Annual Guardian golf tournament at Seascape Golf Links in Kitty Hawk.

The day started with a remembrance of the tragic events of 9/11 including a reading of the poem “We’re Still Standing” by Hannah Schoechert, a 7th grade student from Minnesota at the time of the tragedy.

It’s well worth a click on this link to read her inspirational words.

The tournament featured foursomes representing all of our local Coast Guard and Auxiliary commands including Coast Guard Boat Stations at Oregon Inlet, Hatteras, and Elizabeth City, the Aids to Navigation (ANT) Station in Wanchese, and the Air Station in Elizabeth City.

Captain Matthew Baer, Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Sector NC also captained a team and presented a special award to Auxiliary member Travis Cullifer for his extraordinary support in the inspection of commercial fishing vessels across the Outer Banks.

The tournament was won by Lieutenant Jimmy McCormack’s team of “ringers” from Air Station Elizabeth City, posing with Kitty who did a great job with the beverage cart all day.

The winners received the crystal Guardian Cup and gift certificates generously donated by Seascape and our friends from Kitty Hawk Kites.

While their score of 61 left little doubt, there was a dogfight for second place shared by Boat Station Hatteras and ANT-Wanchese.

Thanks to Dan O’Boyle and his staff at Seascape as well as the folks at the Sand Trap Tavern and our friends at Dunkin’ Donuts for their generous contributions.

Their support made this a wonderful opportunity to pay tribute to the incredible role the Coast Guard, and it’s dedicated “Guardians” play ensuring our safety on the water here in the OBX.
