Closings and schedule changes for Thanksgiving Week on the Outer Banks

The Thanksgiving holiday is observed on both Thursday and Friday in North Carolina, which means that town, county and state government offices will be closed both days.

And trash and recycling pick-ups will take place on different schedules for some this week.

Town of Duck
In observance of Thanksgiving the Town office will be closed on Thursday & Friday, November 25 & 26. The office will reopen on Monday, November 29 at 9:00 a.m.

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, commercial solid waste/trash collection will occur on the following schedule:
Monday, November 22 normal
Friday, November 26 will be collected on Saturday, November 27

Town of Southern Shores
Southern Shores Town offices will be closed on Thursday, November 25, 2021, and Friday, November 26, 2021, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Trash (Monday) and recycling (Wednesday) pick-up are on the normal schedules.

Town of Kitty Hawk
Town Offices Will Be Closed on Thursday, November 25th and Friday, November 26th. We will re-open on Monday, November 29, 2021.

Due to Dare County’s Holiday Schedule, there will be one residential trash collection this week, taking place on Monday, November 22.

Commercial collection will be on Monday and Wednesday.

The Town’s regular collection schedule will resume on Monday, November 29th.

Town of Kill Devil Hills

Town of Nags Head
All Town of Nags Head administrative offices will be closed Thursday and Friday, November 25 and 26, 2021.


Commercial Sanitation Collection
Monday, November 22 – Trash collected as usual.
Tuesday, November 23, 2021 – Trash collected.
Wednesday, November 24 – No trash collected.
Thursday, November 25 – No trash collected.
Friday, November 26 – Trash collected.
Saturday, November 27 – Trash collected.

The Brush/Bulk Drop-off yard will be closed Thursday, November 25, 2021.

Town of Manteo
The Town of Manteo Administrative Offices will be closed on Thursday, November 25th and Friday, November 26th in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Residential and commercial pickup will be done on Monday, November 22nd and Wednesday, November 24th. Regular scheduled trash pickup will resume on Monday, November 29th.

Dare County

All Dare County offices will be closed on Thursday, November 25, 2021, and Friday, November 26, 2021, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. Dare County offices will reopen at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, November 29, 2021.

The Dare County C&D Landfill in Manns Harbor, the Buxton Transfer Station and the Manteo Recycle Yard will be closed on Thursday, November 25, 2021, as well as Friday, November 26, 2021, in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. These sites will reopen on Saturday, November 27, 2021.

Dare County Public Works, which provides trash collection for the unincorporated areas of Dare County as well as the Town of Kitty Hawk, has announced a revised collection schedule.

There will be one residential pickup per area the week of Thanksgiving, which runs from Monday, November 22, 2021, through Friday, November 26, 2021.

Residential trash collection for the week of Monday, November 22, 2021, through Friday, November 26, 2021, will be as follows:

  • Monday, November 22, 2021: Kitty Hawk, Colington, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras
    (Trash collection will resume on Monday, November 29, 2021)
  • Tuesday, November 23, 2021: Manteo, Wanchese, Manns Harbor, East Lake, Stumpy Point, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo and Avon
    (Trash collection will resume on Tuesday, November 30, 2021)
  • Wednesday, November 24, 2021: No residential trash collection.
  • Thursday, November 25, 2021: Closed – no trash collection. Happy Thanksgiving!
  • Friday, November 26, 2021: Closed – no trash collection.

Commercial trash pickup will take place on Monday, November 22, 2021, and Wednesday, November 24, 2021. Commercial trash collection will resume on Monday, November 29, 2021.
