Charlie, the first foal of 2022, dies unexpectedly in Carova

We are devastated to post tonight that Charlie, born March 25, died very suddenly late this afternoon. He showed no sign of illness, struggle, or distress.

He was with his parents by the fire station in Carova around 4pm. Security camera footage showed that he seemed completely fine, walking right next to his mom at 4:13. At 4:19 he laid down, and by 4:30 he had passed away. His parents and brother are fine and behaving normally, though of course were very distressed by his sudden loss.

We will be taking Charlie’s body to the state lab in Raleigh tomorrow morning so that a necropsy can be performed. We will post another update when we have some answers, but wanted to do this initial post tonight since the situation was witnessed by a lot of people and we don’t want rumors or misinformation to spread. Everything we know at this point is stated in this post.

We are so deeply grateful to everyone who helped us this afternoon. Thank you for being there for us, and for Charlie.
