Changes to two Marine Fisheries Commission rules became effective on August 1, but they are not expected to impact fishing operations. They simply codify regulations already implemented by proclamation and make minor conforming changes.
The rules pertain to oyster sanctuaries and commercial shellfish sanitation and processing procedures.
Oyster Sanctuaries – Amendments to 15A NCAC 03R .0117 add the boundaries of the two newest oyster sanctuaries (Cedar Island and Gull Shoal) and correct boundaries for three other oyster sanctuaries (Pea Island, Raccoon Island, and Swan Island). These changes were implemented by proclamation until they could be adopted in permanent rule.
Commercial Shellfish Sanitation and Processing Procedures – Amendments to 15A NCAC 03K .0110 correct wording to make the rule consistent with similar current rules. Changes also update a website address.
Text of the rules can be found in the Aug. 1, 2024, Supplement to the 2020 N.C. Marine Fisheries Commission Rulebook at https://deq.nc.gov//DMF-Rules.
