UPDATED: CenturyLink outage takes down remote schooling, other providers

CenturyLink has located and is working on a damaged fiber cable that took down remote learning for some local students, as well as impacted providers like Mediacom.

The estimated restoration time for repairs was 2 p.m. Fiber optic services in Nags Head came back online around 1:45 p.m.

Tideland Electric Cooperative reported the outage was the result of a fiber cut, and that their phone lines were out this morning.

The Newport/Morehead City office of the National Weather Service also reported the same problem.

Other customers said they were informed the problem originated in the Rocky Mount area.,

Currituck County Schools shared OBXToday’s Facebook post about the outage with a shrug emoji and a “Happy Friday!” Student families were told all school work would be posted online as soon as possible.

The outage started just after midnight on Friday.
