Carter J. Hickman, of Moyock, NC, born on January 29, 1929, in Mt. Moriah, MO, peacefully passed away on June 23, 2023, at Elizabeth City Health & Rehabilitation Center. He was 94 years old.

Carter led a remarkable life filled with dedication, service, and love. He began his journey by serving his country in the US Army from September 1, 1948, to May 9, 1952, during which he displayed exceptional bravery and valor, earning two Purple Hearts and one Bronze Star. His unwavering commitment to duty and his fellow soldiers will always be remembered.

After his honorable discharge from the military, Carter dedicated thirty years and one month of his life to the Charleston Naval Shipyard, where he showcased his exceptional skills and work ethic. He retired from his career there, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism and excellence.

Outside of work, Carter found solace and joy in his passions. He was deeply passionate about farming and took great pride in raising horses. His love for these animals extended to his involvement with the American Racking Horse Association, where he remained a valued member for many years.

Carter’s life revolved around his family, whom he cherished dearly. He is survived by his loving wife, Catherine Ann Haddon Hickman. Together, they built a strong and enduring bond that served as an inspiration to all who knew them.

He also leaves behind a sister, Alice Ann Riggins, and eight children: Bill (Lynnie), Dennis, Judy, Kevin (Annette), Jim, Robert, Laurie, and Andrew, who were the source of immense pride and joy for him. Carter’s legacy continues through his twenty-two grandchildren, thirty-one great-grandchildren, and ten great-great-grandchildren, who will forever hold his memory close to their hearts.

Carter was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel Wright Hickman and Johnny Hickman, as well as his first wife, Pauline Ford Hickman, and six siblings. Although he is no longer with us, his memory will continue to live on through those who loved him.

In accordance with Carter’s wishes, a private family service will be held to celebrate his life. This final farewell will serve as a time for his loved ones to come together and honor his memory.

Carter J. Hickman’s journey on this earth has come to an end, but his impact and the love he shared with those around him will endure forever. As we say our goodbyes, we remember the words from Ecclesiastes 3:1, “To everything there is a season.” May he find eternal peace and may his spirit guide and inspire us all in our own seasons of life.
