Wanchese- Mr. Carlton Gene Barkley or “Corkey” as he was best known, passed away on March 3, 2020 as he wished- at his home, in his favorite recliner, with his wife Millie by his side.
Born March 20, 1946 Corkey was just shy of his 74th birthday. He was born in Elizabeth City, NC the son of the late Calvin and Effie Barkley. Corky was also predeceased by his brother, C.B. Barkley and his father-in-law, Bill Gallop.
Corky was dearly loved and worked hard for his family. He greatly enjoyed fishing, crabbing and shrimping in local waters and loved attending his grandchildren’s many sporting events.
Corky Barkley is survived by Mildred “Millie” Gallop Barkley his wife of 41 years; and his three daughters; Tanya Barkley-Graham, Veelee Donahue (Bill) and Dana Tillett (Kydd). He was PawPaw to five grandchildren; Forest (Esther), York, Thatcher, Corbin, and CeeCee. Also surviving is Corkey’s sister, Sylvia Williams (Webb); his brother, Jimmy Barkley (Delana); his mother-in-law, Lois Gallop; two God-children, Tess and Dallas, as well as many special nieces and nephews, and too many caring friends to mention.
The family is honoring Corkey’s plans for cremation. The memorial service will be held at Bethany United Methodist Church of Wanchese Sunday, March 15, 2020 at 2 pm. Rev. Ken Mann will officiate. Friends may call on the family at all times until the service at the Barkley/Gallop residences.
