Carlton Aldridge “Jackie” Shannon, Sr., 88, of Manteo, NC passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 3, 2021, at The Outer Banks Hospital.
A native of Dare County, Jackie was born on August 10, 1932, to the late Lillie Perry Shannon and John Shannon of Manteo.
Having served his country honorably during the Korean and Vietnam wars, Jackie retired as a Master Chief Petty Officer from the United States Coast Guard after 21 years of service. Following his first retirement he worked for several years as a commercial fisherman in Manteo. His second retirement would come following a career as a tugboat engineer with Seafarer International Union.
Jackie is survived by his loving wife of 64-years, Shirley Midgett Shannon; two sons, Carlton A. Shannon, Jr. and wife Karen of Charlotte, NC and John Shannon of Manteo, NC; and three grandchildren, Kathleen Shannon of Celebration, FL, Emily Shannon of Houston, TX, and Mary Shannon of Charlotte, NC.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Gray and Yvonne Hammond.
Jackie loved hunting, fishing, NASCAR racing, country music, traveling, general mechanics, and carpentry. He was a jack of all trades and was one of those men generally able and willing to fix most things for family and friends. But the true love of his life was his family. He and Shirley were a devoted couple, rarely seen apart following his retirement and the travel his work required. He was a proud father to his two sons and a loving grandfather to his three granddaughters. He will be sorely missed.
A funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, July 14, 2021, at Twiford Colony Chapel with Pastor Marc O’Neal officiating. Burial will take place in Manteo Cemetery. The family will receive friends and relatives for visitation one hour prior to the service. The service will be live streamed for family and friends unable to attend in person.
