The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has announced that efforts to clear the canal on Buffalo City Road has officially begun as of Monday, July 18, 2022 at the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge.
Vegetation has almost completely overgrown the canal that runs alongside Buffalo City Road. Clearing vegetation, downed trees and other debris from the canal that runs along the road is the project goal.
Refuge staff are using excavators to scoop out vegetation which will be temporarily piled on the road shoulder to dry before removal. Increasingly clogged with vegetation, some portions of the canal are nearly filled in and this is hindering waterflow into Milltail Creek.
Access to Buffalo City Road public boat launch at the southern end of the road should remain open. There may reduced parking along the road and short delays due to removal equipment being used on this project.
Work is expected to last 3 weeks.
