The body of a 35-year-old Tyrrell County man has been recovered from the Albemarle Sound, after he jumped from the N.C. 32 bridge between Chowan and Washington counties.

Officers were called Thursday at around 10:30 p.m. to investigate a report of man that told family members he was going to jump off the 3.5 mile long span, according to a Chowan County Sherriff’s Office news release.

Deputies found an unoccupied vehicle wrecked at the foot of the bridge, and their investigation determined he may have walked out onto the bridge and jumped.

The Chowan County Sherriff’s Office and Emergency Management began a search, and were joined by members of the U.S. Coast Guard, N.C. Wildlife Law Enforcement, N.C. Marine Patrol, Bunyan Fire Department and volunteers.

A Chowan County Sherriff’s Office dive team located the man’s remains Saturday morning.
