College of The Albemarle (COA) is pleased to announce that “Kaleidoscope,” an exhibition of paintings and works on paper by Patrick Berran, will open on October 7, 2022, in the Professional Arts Building at COA – Dare.

His most recent group exhibitions include The American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York; Southampton Art Center and Hall Art Foundation in Reading, Vermont; Rod Bianco, Oslo; M+B Gallery, Los Angeles, California; Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art, Indianapolis, Indiana and Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, New York.

Berran has been a visiting artist and guest lecturer at Alfred University, Kent State University, and Virginia Commonwealth University. He has recently completed artist residencies at the Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts in Ithaca, New York, Dial House in Essex, United Kingdom, Vermont Studio Center and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts in Amherst, Virginia.

His work has been reviewed in the New York Times, Hyperallergic, The Brooklyn Rail, and featured in BOMB Magazine and Architectural Digest. In 2012, Berran was named one of Modern Painters’ 100 Artists to Watch.

Berran shared the following regarding his works,

My painting practice relies on the transformation of visual materials through a process of experimentation and recycling.  These particular images and patterns originated with observational sketches created during travels. I employ various transfer techniques to evolve my original source material into abstract forms. The resulting patterns I transcribe, layer upon layer, into my painted compositions to create a frenetic rhythmic quality aligned with punk rock music’s fast-paced and stripped-down audio experience. The resulting works are akin to a form of visual entropy or aesthetic ‘interference.

Berran lives in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, and is a full-time visual arts instructor at the College of The Albemarle. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia, and his Master of Fine Arts from Hunter College, New York.

“Kaleidoscope” will run from October 7th through October 31st.  The gallery is on the second floor of the Professional Arts Building at COA – Dare, 205 Highway 64 S., Manteo, North Carolina.  The public is welcome to visit the gallery Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The artist’s opening reception will be held on Friday, October 7th, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at COA – Dare as part of Manteo’s First Fridays.
