Beach nourishment efforts progress in Southern Shores, Weeks Marine to pause work until Fiona passes

[Town of Southern Shores]

Crews with Weeks Marine began laying the dredge discharge pipe, or sub-line, near 60 Ocean Blvd on Tuesday, September 20th.

The dredges will come close to shore and hook up to this line and pump sand onto the beach which was collected from the borrow area further offshore. They will continue to work their way south to tie in with the northern end of the Kitty Hawk project.

The active construction area will be sectioned off, but beach goers will still be able to reach the beach on either side of the construction area.

The Town of Southern Shores will provide an update once the sand starts pumping onto the beach which now isn’t planned to start until after Hurricane Fiona passes, as it is expected to produce large waves. From that point forward, the Town will send updates periodically, but will be keeping the progress map up to date.

Project updates can be accessed through the Town’s website at www.southernshores-nc.gov and through the Dare County website at More Beach to Love at www.darenc.com.
