A couple from Virginia missing overnight have been found safe on the Dare County mainland.

The family reported the couple, who are in their 60s, were staying with them in Colington and were last seen there around 1 p.m. Their names and hometown have not been released.

The couple’s 1998 red Ford Taurus with Virginia plates was possibly sighted in the area of Mill Tail along U.S. 64 in Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge around 3:30 or 4 p.m., according to the Dare County Sheriff’s Office.

Their cellphone last pinged the AT&T cellular site in East Lake around 4 p.m., Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie said.

“The couple was found in good health on the refuge before 8:30 a.m. Monday by members of the refuge fire team,” Dare County Sherrif’s Office Major Jeff Deringer said.

Various local and state agencies, family members and others searched the refuge and the adjacent Dare Bombing Range through the night.
