The wild horses of the Currituck Outer Banks have yet another new addition.
The little girl was born Friday night, and she and mom are both doing very well, said Corolla Wild Horse Fund herd manager Meg Puckett. The CWHF hasn’t decided on a name yet.
Between four and six foals are born to the wild horses each year, Puckett said. The CWHF manages the herd of about 100 wild mustangs roaming the four-wheel-drive beaches and a rescue farm of about 15 horses.
Puckett reminds folks on the four-wheel drive beaches to give this year’s moms and foals plenty of space. Currituck County last week began allowing out-of-town property owners back to Corolla and Carova.
“It’s critical that they have the time to bond with each other,” Puckett said. “Parents can be very aggressive when it comes to protecting their young, too.”
If you’re lucky enough to come across any of the foals please snap a photo from 50 feet or more and then be on your way, Puckett said. Hovering and circling around them is very stressful.
