Is that the “Jaws” theme music we hear?

A 12.4-foot long, 998-pound great white shark tracked by Ocearch researchers “pinged” off Hatteras Island on Monday, not long after pinging in the Pamlico Sound near the Neuse River.

The shark, named Ironbound, is a huge adult white shark first tagged in Nova Scotia in 2019. He pinged off Hatteras Island apparently headed north at 11:01 a.m.

Ironbound, who is named after West Ironbound Island near Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, isn’t the only tagged great white hanging around the Outer Banks. On Friday, 11-foot, 737-pound tagged shark Bluenose was swimming close to the beaches off Cape Hatteras.
