24th annual Manteo Rotary Inshore Slam Fishing Tournament coming Oct. 1

The Manteo Rotary Club will hold the 24th annual Inshore Slam Fishing Tournament on Saturday, October 2 with in-person registration from 4 pm to 7:30 pm on October 1.

Tournament headquarters will be in the open air pavilion at the OBX Marina in Wanchese. Discount registrations for both adult and youth are available at rockfishrodeo.org until September 17.

Adult participants compete for cash prizes for the largest fish in four categories; stripers, bluefish, puppy drum, and speckled trout. There is also a single “Grand Slam” award for the individual who weighs in fish from at least three of the four categories, with the highest total weight.

A cash prize for the top lady angler will be given this year. The Sonny Albarty Youth Fishing Tournament for age 16 and under is held in conjunction with Inshore Slam with prizes, trophies and special recognition of a youth scoring an inshore slam.

Manteo Rotary has had a good year even with having to deal with COVID-19. A successful 2020 Inshore Slam let us grant $28,500 in scholarships and provided the initial funding for the Manteo Rotary Sonny Albarty Memorial Scholarship Endowment that now amounts to more than $25,000.

The club provided financial support to many local groups including: Nags Head Elementary School’s Global Read Aloud Project, Roanoke Island Community Garden, Outer Banks Forever, COA Foundation, Roanoke Island Food Pantry, Dare County Arts Council, Coins for Alzheimer’s Research, Dare County COVID19 Vaccination Support, RI Women’s Club Thanksgiving Basket, Friends of Jockey’s Ridge, Service projects that recognized our local hometown heroes – police, teachers, EMS, COA, Dare County Health Department and others.

The club became the sponsor for the Roanoke Island Community Garden as an outreach project and conducted two service projects at the site.

We will dedicate this year’s tournament to Marc Basnight, a native son and lifelong public servant.
