A Currituck County woman was killed in a Thursday morning house fire on Knotts Island.

Crews were called to the fire in the 100 block of Porchard Lane in the Sandy Point Resort area at 8:12 a.m., the Knotts Island Volunteer Fire Department said in a Facebook post. They arrived to find a mobile home engulfed in flames.

With assistance from Currituck Fire and EMS, the county sheriff’s office and the Virginia Beach Fire Department, the fire was brought under control and quickly extinguished.

“As a result of the incident, the community has suffered a fire related fatality with no other reports of civilian or responder injury,” the fire department post said.

Fire officials said the case remains under investigation and no further information was released about the victim.

A GoFundMe has been launched to benefit the family. Three people lived at the mobile home, according to a post on the account page that also gave the names of the victims.

The fire department issued a reminder to residents that working smoke alarms save lives.

“Please test your smoke alarms monthly, replace batteries every six months, and alarms every ten years. Smoke alarms and installation assistance is available to the community through the Knotts Island VFD, CCFEMS, and the NC Office of the State Fire Marshal. Please contact Station #8 by phone for any smoke alarm requests,” the fire department said.
