A local man drowned Friday afternoon near the Carroll Drive beach access in Duck.
Duck Surf lifeguards entered the water about 3 p.m. to rescue a swimmer lying face down. Duck fire, police and Dare County EMS units were also dispatched.
The 65-year-old man was unresponsive and CPR was initiated by lifeguards and bystanders. Duck Public Safety personnel assisted Dare County EMS with patient care on scene.
Despite all efforts, the patient was pronounced dead. Duck authorities did not release the man’s name. It is not believed that a rip current was involved, Duck officials said in a news release.
It was the second drowning within three days on the Outer Banks. A 65-year-old man from the Philadelphia-area died Sunday morning while swimming off Ocracoke Island near where a large rip current was spotted.
Public safety officials urge beach goers to swim near a lifeguard and to ask surf rescue personnel about ocean conditions near them. Know your limits; if the conditions exceed your capability, don’t swim.
